Do Eyelashes Grow Back?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Do eyelashes grow back is actually quite a common question and the answer is yes, your eyelash growth is usually the same as the hair on your head. However, it doesn’t necessarily follow that if you have full, thick hair on your head that your eyelashes will be full and thick as well.

There are several factors that affect eyelash growth, trauma (mental or physical), age and your normal care routine to name but three. Let’s look at those three one-by-one.

Should you be unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident the shock of that accident, even if it does not involve your eyes, an accident can stop the growth for a while. Similarly, if you are very stressed or depressed this can happen as well. Of course you would be more concerned if you had an accident that directly affected your eyes, such as getting them singed at a barbeque! At these times you may have asked yourself, “do eyelashes grow back”. The answer is still yes, and they should grow back normally even if this takes longer than normal you should still see growth within 4 to 8 weeks. When the regrowth starts, this will be usually at the same rate as the growth of the hair on your head.

When you are younger, as with a lot of things, your body is better at regeneration. Age unfortunately not only affects the skin, it will also affect the regeneration process of the eyelashes and you will find your eyelashes thinning out considerable. You could try an eyelash grower serum which will certainly help as some have been scientifically tested (some of these tests may not pass what some people think of as science, but they have certainly shown something happening). The serums are applied to base of the lashes with a mascara wand every night for a couple of weeks so are very simple to use. You will have to re-do this every couple of months but the effects are worth it. You could also try the serums once your lashes have started to re-grow following trauma.

If you do not care for your eyes properly you will of course end up damaging your lashes. Too many people go for a quick wipe, dragging and pulling out their eyelashes as they do so. Be gentle and think about what you are doing and NEVER sleep in your make-up! Not only is this particularly unattractive in the morning, your eyes will suffer.

So, do eyelashes grow back? They certainly do for the majority of people but if you are worried contact your doctor. Otherwise, I’m afraid you will just need to be patient!

Eyelash Implants

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Getting eyelash implants is just one of your available options if you want to grow your eyelashes on a more lasting basis. Maybe you don’t want to try eyelash serums, volumising mascaras, or eyelash extensions (also known as semi-permanent extensions), then eyelash implants may be for you.

Although not primarily developed as a cosmetic procedure, surgery for eyelash implants has quickly advanced and is now a highly profitable market.

The surgery for eyelash implants is performed under a local anaesthetic so you won’t actually feel any pain, but you will obviously be very aware of the surgeon being close to the eye. This may not be to bad though as eye shields are normally used to protect the eye from any possible damage. The whole procedure takes around one or two hours, but this depends on the number of implants you require. Generally, around 30 – 60 hair follicles are removed from the back of the head or the neck and planted into the upper lash area. For a few people, this type of procedure may feel like the physician is invading their personal space and make them feel a little uneasy.

Please note that you will need a up to a week to recover from this procedure, and that you should always follow the doctor’s recommendations regarding aftercare. Don’t be alarmed if some of the eyelash implants drop out after three or four weeks, this is perfectly normal and they will grow back.

Do not expect instant results, as you will not get them. Implants act like the hair on your head and will take 12 to 24 weeks for you to detect much difference. One thing to note though, if the hair is coming from your scalp, then your new lashes will grow faster than your natural eyelashes and will need trimming. It is also likely that your new implants will behave in the same tendencies as when they were in your scalp. That is, if you have coarse curly hair, you will could need to straighten them. Your doctor should discuss this possibility with you and what you can to do about it.

If all this sounds too much, you could think about having eyelash extensions instead, as these are really quite effective nowadays. Synthetic lashes are just glued to your individual lashes through a painless procedure and you will find that they are resistant to water, sun, sweat or tears. Avoid water for the first two hours after the procedure and waterproof mascara at all times as this may pull the lashes off as it bonds with the natural lashes. The downside of extensions is that they only last for about two months before you will need to have them replaced.

Although eyelash implants are a good way to improve the look of your eyes, having this procedure should not be considered lightly. It is after all a type of transplant surgery and is therefore expensive and does have certain risks. Do consider trying other avenues before you go down this particular avenue.

How To Grow Longer Eyelashes

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Have you ever wondered how to grow longer eyelashes but were unsure how to go about it? Hope we can help!

You’re not alone if you have ever asked someone how to get long eyelashes, especially if you are like me and have relatives and friends with gorgeous thick and long lashes I understand!!

The number one thing NOT to do is to pull them in any way shape or form. You should take special care when cleaning the makeup off your eyes and use a very gentle remover and very light strokes. Try and go make up free for at least once a week (yes, I know it can be hard!) and try and get hypo-allergenic make up such as the pure mineral make up.

If you curl your eyelashes this will make them appear longer. Applying eye liner close to the lashes in a slightly darker colour than the lashes and extending slightly out will also give the same illusion. You could also of course wear semi permanent false eyelashes.

The use of castor oil has also been suggested to help grow longer eyelashes; however, there is no scientific proof of this actually happening.

Lash extensions can be professionally applied to grow longer eyelashes and will look quite natural. These will need to be touched up two or three times a year and will cost you over a hundred dollars. If you have the money, and are brave enough, you can have eyelash transplants that are that effective you may even have to trim them!

The other way to grow longer eyelashes is of course to get some form of eyelash growth product. Some of these work incredibly well (I used Idol Lash, but LiLash also has a good reputation) but you do need to be careful how you use them and must follow the instructions carefully.

The good news is that you don’t have to live with short thin lashes as there are several ways in which you can either grow longer eyelashes or give the illusion with a few simple techniques.
